The archipelago of the Balearic islands is located off the east coast of Spain. These islands are known for their ancient ruins, their beaches and their coves. Mallorca is one of the archipelago's most visited islands. The main city, Palma de Mallorca, has many cultural and natural attractions.

Visit the Beaches

The island has many beaches and coves. The southern coast, located near Palma de Mallorca, has more urban beaches, and the northern coast is known for its coves. Visitors will be able to sail a boat, and there are several port towns where boats and yachts can be rented. Another typical activity is snorkel and other types of diving.

Visitors will be able to rent a boat and visit several of the nearby islands. Boat trips are organized along the coast of the island and to the coast of the Spanish peninsula. There are several sightseeing tours.

Explore the Castles, Fortresses and Squares

The Seu Cathedral is one of Palma's main architectural attractions. The city's main harbour can be seen from the cathedral.

The Bellver Castle is an ancient Gothic castle located on a hill with views over the Palma Bay. This castle is one of the city's main landmarks. The circular castle, which used to be a mint, has three towers and a bailey. Inside the castle visitors will find a chapel.

La Almudaina Royal Palace is the city's Alcazar, an ancient fortress. The palace is located on the opposite side of the Seu Cathedral, over the Palma Bay. This ancient Arabian fortress was turned into a royal residence and visitors will be able to explore the courtyards, the Royal Chapel and the tower.

Another one of the city's main palaces is the Valldemossa Monastery. This monastery is located in the mountains and has views over this Balearic island and is now used as the Museum of Contemporary Art. Part of the museum is located inside an antique pharmacy where visitors will be able to see many glass jars and medicines.

The Plaza Mayor is a pedestrianized square where visitors will find many cafés and restaurants. In the nearby streets there are many market stalls and traditional pastry shops selling fresh pastries.

Tour the Caves

The island has more than two hundred caves that visitors will be able to explore. The caves are a popular attraction and are located only a short ride away from Palma de Mallorca. There are caves with underground lakes, stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours are offered around the Drach caves and some the island's smaller caves. Some of the caves host concerts and other cultural events.
