Socorro Way of Living

Socorro is a 4th class municipality in the Province of Surigao del Norte. It covers the well-known Bucas Grande Group of Islands where pristine Islands and beaches; enchanting Sohoton National Park; and the infamous Jellyfish Sanctuary  are located.

I've got the chance to explore the whole main island of Bucas Grande on May 2013 during the usual community visits and area mapping. Riding in a habal-habal - the only mode of inland public transportation available in the island, we  visited seaside up to the highland communities of Socorro.

I saw the impact of tourism in the economy of  Socorro and the whole province of Surigao del Norte. But compared to other destinations, I don’t see any “bad tourism” in this humble Island. You can see and feel that people are protecting the source of their livelihood- no abuse and they know how to manage and accommodate large no. of visitors coming "in and out" on their interesting spots.

Of course, not all communities in Socorro depends on the advantage of these tourist spots. Other communities are still living and sourcing their livelihood from the usual fishing and farming. On my two days staying and exploring in Socorro, I was able to get photos of "the other side" - the communities away from its famous destinations. These photos inspired me more to continue this job- to work- to travel- to live. Photos I need to see during those days where I need to reflect and remind me why I love to do this job. Why I love to travel, why I love to visit other communities and meet people.
