You have probably heard about the Canary Islands: an archipelago of seven islands belonging to Spain that are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. These islands are a very popular holiday destination: vast natural parks, golden and black-sand beaches, waves... If you want to enjoy a beach holiday filled with hiking trips and occasional museum visits, then Tenerife is waiting for you.
Beaches and waves.
Tenerife has many beaches. There are black-sand, volcanic beaches on the northern shore, near the city of Puerto de la Cruz. If you prefer golden beaches, then head to the many resorts located on the south and west coasts. Here you will find the famous Playa de las Américas and Playa de los Cristianos beaches. These two beaches have a variety of hotels, beach villas and many bars, pubs and restaurants where to relax. Make sure to book your accommodation on the island of Tenerife in advance: its spring weather makes it an ideal holiday destination all year round. The Adeje coast is another option: its clear-water beaches are ideal for diving and windsurfing.
Hiking around the Tenerife National Park.
Did you know that Spain’s highest peak is located on the island of Tenerife? The 3,700 meter high Teide volcano is located in the center of the island, and is a must-see. There are many options available for those who want to explore the park: you can join one of the many bus tours that will drive you around the main geological formations, the other option being to rent a car and enjoy the views. Take the cable car that takes you to the observation deck near the top of the volcano. From here you will be able to see the coast and the ocean, and, on clear days, one of the neighbouring islands. If you want to hike to the very top, you will have to book a special permit in advance: these are limited and hikes can be done only in the morning.
Take a boat trip to the Gigantes cliffs
Los Gigantes is a set of large cliffs located on the south and west coast of this island. The cliffs are a very popular destination for a day trip: you can even rent your own boat and sail towards the cliffs. There are many tours that offer a boat ride with a traditional lunch on board... and you may even catch a glimpse of the dolphins and whales that can be usually found in the area.
Explore the colonial cities... and the museums.
The largest city on the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where one of the island’s two airports is located. This seaside city is filled to the brim with bars, restaurants and all kinds of shops. The city center is known for its cobblestone streets and architecture, ranging from colonial houses to white, conch-shaped buildings. If you want to know more about Tenerife’s botany and history, then the centric Museum of History and Man is the place for you. Here you will be able to see ancient mummies, prehistoric pottery and a variety of weapons. The nearby Puerto de Santa Cruz is worth a visit: take an afternoon off to bathe in the seaside pools designed by Cesar Manrique and then head to the La Orotava botanic gardens. The northern city of San Cristobal de La Lagunais filled with history, and you must not miss its cathedral, the Bishop’s palace and House of the Alhóndiga.
